What to Look Out for When Touring an Assisted Living Facility

What is an assisted living facility?

Assisted living is a way to maintain your loved one's independence while providing them with the assistance they need. The facilities provide residents activities and socialization so that they can stay socially engaged, all while retaining their sense of self-reliance.

These activities include meal management, medication dispensation, bathing, and dressing.

Assisted living facilities can be either for adults or seniors.

When it comes to choosing the right assisted living facility, you should take a look at their level of care.

You should consider quality care during your visit, as it may be difficult to assess this from afar home with other technologies in play that would help determine which place could best suit their needs and how they are treated by staff members on-site at any given time.

We’ve compiled a list of what to look for when assessing a senior assisted living community:

Medications

Residents must have a basic understanding of how medications work before entering an assisted living facility. Check the licensing and credentials of on-staff doctors. Are your loved one’s regular doctors nearby or will your aging loved one’s has to switch healthcare providers?

Ask about area doctors and hospitals

Investigate the doctors, physical therapists, and other healthcare professionals that are onsite. Explore physicians and hospitals in the area, too.

Safety and Security

  • Check the rooms and bathrooms if they have handrails and call buttons.

  • Guide them if there will be an emergency parent call for help should they will be needing something.

  • Check if there are any security and fire safety systems.

  • Is there an emergency generator or alternate power source?

Dining and Food safety

Ask about the food - what type of menu do they offer, are there any dietary restrictions, and will they cater to your needs.

  • If you are visiting during a meal, is the aroma pleasant?

  • Is the menu diverse and healthy?

Recreational Activities

Find out how often the residents are taken on outings and what is offered during these trips.

Check if there are any additional costs for certain activities and how residents will be reminded in their daily activities.
